Do the exercises that accompany les articles:  explanations and exercises (PDF on French Grammar Review pages).  Use your dictionary for words you need to translate and check the spelling of the verb conjugations in the appendix of Interaction.

Interaction:  Read the explanations pp. 204-205 for "Asking Questions about Things, Actions, Situations."  Write out exercise 2, p. 205 and be prepared to do #3 orally in class.  Download the PDF for "Interrogative Pronouns" from the French Grammar Pages.  Be prepared to do the exercises in class. Read the explanations of the "Pronoms relatifs" pp. 211-213.  We will do some of the exercises in class.

Bring your Phonétique progressive book to class. 

Chapitre 6:  Write out exercises:  p. 212, 1; 214, 2.  Read pp. 218-220 about François Truffaut.  Follow the "Guide de lecture," p, 219 and answer the questions before re-reading the text.  After you read the text, do the exercises on p. 221 "Pour mieux lire." These sets of questions will allow you to get the most out of your reading.  We will discuss the questions about this text in class. 

All Quia exercises for Chapitre 6 are to be completed.

    Classes follow a Monday Schedule

Choose one of your past journals or the first Bienvenue text you wrote and make corrections to it.  Retype it (double-spaced!) and hand in the original with the corrected version.  Do not simply copy my corrections onto your new text.  In some instances you need to consult the online dictionaries to make sure that your vocabulary is correct.  No grade will be assigned if you do not hand in the original with your revised text.

Practice reading/recitation of "Demain dès l'aube."

Hand in your re-written text/journal/composition (this will be the written text for your mid-term), if you have not already done so.

Bring Delattre and Phonétique progressive texts to class (along with your copy of the phonetic alphabet). If you did not complete the first recording of the Phonétique progressive, do it by Monday. Then do the recordings for the mid-term. 

Interaction:  Chapitre 7, Disjunctive pronouns.  Read pp. 243-244 and do exercises 1, 2 pp. 245-246.

Go to the TV5 site and watch the first two segments of the Oct. 11 program of Kiosque:  Introduction and the Edito:  Nobel oblige.  Answer the questions on the sheet distributed in class (and as a PDF at this link).  This is an introduction to the work we will do after the mid-term exam on the use of the Discours indirect.

Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis text, Part II--if you haven't already handed it in.

MID-TERM EXAMINATION The exam is one hour long. You will recite your memorized poem at that time.  This date has changed!

The exam will consist of the following parts (20 pts. each):
1)  Recitation of memorized poem (in class)
2)  Revised text you handed in (with draft)
3)  Grammar (articles and pronouns) (in class)
4)  Phonetics (listening/identifying sounds; transcriptions)  WITHOUT USING YOUR LIST OF SYMBOLS! (in class)
5)  Recordings (to be uploaded to the Forum pages). Instructions are posted on the Forum website.

After the exam, we will discuss the first two parts of Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis.

Bring the Discours Indirect printouts to class.  We will begin to work on exercises together.  Make sure that you bring your draft of the Kiosque text that you did for Oct. 19.  You will be revising it for a grade.

Composition: Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (jusqu'à la fin).  Instructions distributed in class.  Be prepared to talk about your impressions of the film and its study of prejudices in class (in French!).

Discours indirect--continuation of exercises and Kiosque text.

Note:  Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis will remain in the lab until Monday, Nov. 2.  There is a new film to watch, to prepare us for our work on the films of Marcel Pagnol:  the English version, Fanny.  Start to watch it, since you have an assignment due (see below). 

We will finish up any discours indirect exercises that remain.

Rewrite your text about Kiosque, using the discours indirect, where appropriate.  Look at the segment again to check your vocabulary and information.  Hand in your original text as well. 

Discussion (en français!!!) of Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis

All rewrites (including drafts) of the three texts about Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis due.  This will be the last opportunity you have to make up any/all of the work that is missing.

On the handout for the Marseille Trilogy, answer the questions regarding the next parts of the Bonus DVD:  "L'arrivée du parlant" and "Dialogue et mots d'auteur." Incorporate the answers into a summary of these sections, giving specific examples from the film.  We will compare scenes from the English version to the French version.
