The College of Staten Island / City University of New York and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, in partnership with Shanghai University's School of Film & Television, China Film Archives, Asia Society, and CUNY-TV (City Cinematheque) will sponsor a five-day retrospective in October 2005 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of film production in China. Endorsed by Chinese State Administration of Radio, Film & TV, the retrospective serves as one of the principle venues for the celebration of the centenary of Chinese cinema.

Purpose

Our purpose in sponsoring this celebratory retrospective is several-fold. Through a symposium, our intention is to deepen the discourse on Chinese cinema by bringing together prominent filmmakers, studio executives, critics, and scholars from US, Asia, and Europe in the international setting of New York City and on the tranquil campus of the College of Staten Island. Through a film forum and festival at Lincoln Center, a more general audience will be offered a survey of the history of Chinese cinema, from the silent era to contemporary productions, accompanied by discussion and interviews designed to illuminate the viewings.  And finally, through the mediation of CUNY-TV’s cable broadcast, we will document this event as we reach a wider public not yet familiar with the extraordinary range of Chinese cinema.
