The program leading to the B.A. in Cinema Studies combines courses in cinema studies and film/video production. Cinema Studies courses include those in film history, theory, and criticism; those in production are designed to develop a student's skills in photography, lighting, editing, sound recording, and film writing. Behind the program is the assumption that future film critics or historians will broaden their understanding of the concrete process of making a film, and the future film-makers will expand their artistic control of the craft with an understanding of the evolution of the film art. This combination of theory and practice will prepare students for a variety of career opportunities in the film world.
