  A History of the building of Manhattan. Building of downtown to gradual expansion uptown. Covered historical background and construction techniques. Book was well researched. The book is significant where "No other city in the world has such a concentration of sky scrapers and large buildings as has Manhattan. It is a city always changing: building, tearing down, rebuilding. It digs below the surface it reaches to the sky (pg.1). The book has enormous energy and creative imagination" (ibid.).

• Christine Lunardini, Ph.D., What Every American Should Know About Women's History: 200 Events that shaped our destiny (Massachusetts; Bob Adams, Inc., 1994)

  Documents women's struggles. Gives primary accost of court records, speeches etc.

• John Bodnar, Remaking America: Public memory, commemoration, and patriotism in the twentieth century (New Jersey; Princeton University Press, 1982)

  Examined the histories in different regions around America to be brought to life. Gives values of every day people and how they have related to the political goals of their national and local governments.

• Richard Goldstein, Mine Eyes have seen: A first-person history of the events that shaped America (New York; A Touchstone Book, 1997)

  This book displays not just historical facts but the actual documents legitimizing the historical fact. It starts with a letter from Verrazano to a telephone conversation between police and Nicole Simpson used in the O.J. trial. This book wanted the audience to experience going back in time. Usually popular history is determined and written by the people on top. "But in looking to these eyewitness accounts from American history, I think most of all Irving Strobin of 605 Barby street, Bklyn... 'But most of us I hope will offer kudos to the heroes and scoundrels, to the otherwise anonymous Americans who became caught up in our history and had the imagination toted the generations to come, yes this is how it was." (p.14). This book displays the memorable events that shaped our nation. It documents 150 primary acts of pivotal moments. It is noted for its comparison study.

• Gerald N. Grob, The Mad Among Us: A history of the care of America's mentally ill (New York; The Free Press, 1994)

  Gives a comprehensive history of the mentally ill. It will help to solve what is best for the care of the mentally ill. By reminding us of the mistakes of the past can we better understand how to handle present. The author traces the growing demands. This book caused hospitals to deteriorate into custodial institutions care. It covers Colonial America to Contemporary America.

• Kenneth Frampton, Modern Architecture: A critical history (London; Thames and Hudson, 1980)

  Book covers 20th century architecture and its origin examining areas of particular significance. The method Frampton uses when determining the oral history is as follows; he feels the first task in writing a history of establishing modern architecture is to establish a beginning which is comprehensive but concise history. First he sees what material is included and second the consistency in the interpretation of facts.

• Miranda Davies, Women Travel: Adventures Advice and Experience (London; Rough Guides, 1990).

  Written to bring women's experiences to the forefront "to highlight the invisible travelers who are pounding the beaten track or finding new paths away from it." (intro, p.8). Travel was something of a privilege especially beyond the western routes. Its a collection of over 100 personal and contemporary accounts describing the countries from the experiences of women.

• Harwitt Martin, An Exhibit Denied: Lobbying the History of Enola Gay (New York; Copernicus Springer-Verlag New York, Inc., 1996)

  Documents the planning and cancellation of B-29 Bomber exhibit at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. This book illustrates how the exhibit displayed the Bomb being dropped on Hiroshima in Japan WW2 and how there was a secret primary document opened in the restoration and therefore the exhibit was canceled.

• Victor G. and Brett De Barry Nee, Long Time Californ': A documentary study of an American Chinatown (New York; Pantheon Books, 1972)

  Documents an oral history of Chinatown.
