Teacher Assistant: Prepare for entry-level employment in a childcare
setting. Family Daycare: Prepare to offer childcare services in your
own home. Owner/Operator Business: Workshop introduces students to the
basic operations of running one's own childcare business. All participants
complete a core curriculum of nine classes and the Childcare Practicum.
For employability, all participants should plan to receive a high school
diploma or GED by program completion, and must complete the course in
School Violence Prevention and the course in Child Abuse Recognition
and Reporting. This program incorporates the Emergent Worker Curriculum.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT I
CARE OF INFANTS AND TODDLERS
Course provides a strong emphasis on infant and toddler development
theory. Hands-on activities involving appropriate practices, materials,
and equipment in a child-centered environment are included.

II
CARE OF PRESCHOOL AGE CHILDREN
Course provides child development theory and practical applications
for preschool-age children. Explore age-appropriate activities for both
academic and personal growth. Discover how the environment that you
create is an important learning tool, including classroom management
techniques.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

CARE OF SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN
Examine teaching and learning as you explore the development needs of
children ages 6-13. Develop interactive age-appropriate activities and
classroom management techniques.
FOUR SESSIONS
CARING FOR
CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Explore how to help children who are physically disabled, learning disabled,
and autistic in both specialized and ordinary settings. Explore various
topics such as children with special needs, center size, ages of children.
FIVE SESSIONS
HEALTH,
SAFETY, AND NUTRITION
Learn principles of good nutrition and how to involve children in food
preparation as a learning activity. Discuss how to make your environment
safe for children. Learn the laws concerning medication for children.
THREE SESSIONS
COMMUNICATION
WITH PARENTS
Learn principles of good communication through role-playing various
situations. Discover ways to involve parents and explore methods of
reducing burnout.
FIVE SESSIONS
CHILDCARE
PRACTICUM
A supervised internship in a childcare setting arranged individually
with the coordinator.
FOUR SESSIONS and TEN HOURS
REGISTRATION/MANAGEMENT
OF FAMILY DAYCARE OWNER/OPERATOR
In this class students will be introduced to the basic operations of
running one's own childcare business. Topics will include advertising,
book and record keeping, tuition and fees, cleaning and maintenance,
infection control, hiring and dismissing staff, regulatory agencies,
and security. TWO SESSIONS
TEACHING
ART FOR CHILDREN
This workshop will provide a structure in which to develop an enriched
arts program for the young child. Students will be able to sample the
materials as well as see the importance of the set-up of those materials.
ONE SESSION
TEACHING
MUSIC FOR CHILDREN
This workshop will provide a hands-on approach to rhythm for the young
child. Students will be exposed to a variety of techniques to incorporate
music into their programs.

This workshop satisfies the NY State Education Department requirement.
