The Medieval Glossed Text

Medieval Gloss

(Oxford Bodleian MS Auct. D. 4.6, f.911, ca. 1160)

Psalter thought to be glossed by Gilbert de la Porée. If you look at the large initial "D" you will see that it is signed by the artist "Iohannes me fecit Rogerio" ("John made me for Roger").

The thumbnails below show further examples of glossed manuscripts. You will notice that at times, the gloss is far more "important" than the original text itself:

Gloss001     Gloss003    Gloss004

Gloss005    Gloss006    Gloss007
